This summer season has been very active to date with a number of natural hazards and human caused hazards becoming disasters around World. This unit examines the types and nature of dominant natural hazards around the globe. It also defines natural hazards and disasters according to UNESCO.
A reliable news site and NASA's Earth Observatory site are used to find and record events. It allows students to plot major hazards during the months ahead and add data to generate maps of their own. A number of excellent web sites are provided to access this data and the students are able to hotlink news articles to their projects.
This unit will use the UNESCO statement that 'the risks of greater tragedies stemming from natural hazards are expected to increase in the next years and over the current new century' and that 'the toll from disasters will be particularly severe and tragic in poor countries.' These statements will become the hypothesis, and already we have evidence of this through the south-east Asian Tsunami.
