Natural Hazards is a unit that is regularly taught in Australian schools at different levels. This unit compliments other hazard units such as the Asian Tsunami unit and the Hurricane Season unit. This exercise provides a GIS example of an Australian natural disaster in 2006. It proved to be one of the most active cyclone seasons in years.

Eight storms in total were tracked from the January to April 2006. They were varying in strength and followed various paths across the region. The most powerful and destructive of these storms were Cyclone Larry and Cyclone Monica. Cyclone Larry affected thousands of people in North Queensland.
