The African unit comes with a range of current data from the World Development data site and the World Health Organisation. There are two projects in this unit. The first has the data manipulated, ready for use. The other is perfect for a practical exercise where the student works through the instructions manipulate data and create maps.

Globalization is a unit that is regularly taught in Australian schools at higher levels in geography. This unit compliments a range of teaching possibilities including the Geography of disease and development. This exercise provides an example of GIS skills and also provides a practical assessment piece using current data from the World Bank, United Nations and World Health Organisation.

With the advent of the Internet data is becoming much more accessible. This data comes from more reliable sites like the World Bank and the United Nations. The data is also improving in its currency. No longer are the use of old text books and old data acceptable to parents or students. GIS technology allows teachers to produce and teach effectively using maps produced from current data to ask questions of their students.

The AusAID Africa.mxd project has already manipulated data as an example for teachers or students.
